Cayla deserves this award for her unbelievable kindness and compassion for a family going through a very hard and permanent life change.
Cayla provided the most patient/family-centered care to a dementia patient who recently suffered a stroke. The patient’s dementia was significantly exacerbated by his stroke leaving him unable to recognize or articulate recognition of his wife. His wife stayed with him every day and night of his admission and struggled emotionally with the cognitive changes this patient was suffering. The patient's symptoms would no longer be manageable at home and the family decided memory care placement at discharge was the best course.
His wife confided in us that it was nearly their 49th wedding anniversary and how heartbroken she was that he would probably never come home. On the day of their anniversary, Cayla brought this patient's wife flowers with a card addressed to her from the patient. She also trained and coached the patient through the process of giving the flowers to his wife. The patient likely forgot seconds after the interaction, but it meant the world to his wife. Cayla deserves this award for her unbelievable kindness and compassion for a family going through a very hard and permanent life change.
