While some other providers seemed to insinuate that this was normal for her, Celina made sure I felt heard and advocated for us with the care team.
My mom was admitted through the ER in a whirlwind of diagnostic imaging and labs after I unexpectedly found her down and severely compromised at home. No one really had an answer for her worsening neuro symptoms and disorientation, which was very scary. Celina was the first nurse she had after being admitted to the floor and immediately validated my observations and concerns about her posturing behaviors, inconsistencies in her speech, and mental status. While some other providers seemed to insinuate that this was normal for her, Celina made sure I felt heard and advocated for us with the care team. She was instrumental in pushing for a STAT MRI after normal hours and ensuring insect-borne diseases were considered. Celina was the only nurse during my mom's whole hospital stay who called me when I left the hospital to give me an update before her shift ended. A couple of days later, after my mom had been transferred to a more intensive level of care, Celina saw me in the lobby and came right over to say she had been thinking of us and to check in on how we were doing. It made such a huge difference to know someone was looking out for my mom even when I wasn't there. As a nurse myself, it was very difficult to be on the patient/family side during that initial admission process of not having answers, and Celina was personable, kind, and had great follow-through. My mom was ultimately diagnosed with West Nile Virus, which is something that might have been passed over had it not been for a few vital members of her care team like Celina during that initial insult of acute encephalitis. I hope Celina knows that she was spot on with her gut feelings of "something just still isn't right here" when we first arrived, and she did an outstanding job in caring for my mom and our family in that hard time.
