While I stepped out of the room to request for a sitter and for the pain team to come to the bedside, Celine offered to stay and sit with the patient for a while putting his stickers on and get him back to the bed. When I came back into the room, he looked as good as new.
I have always thought Celine was an amazing nurse to work alongside, but a situation in August really opened my eyes to how amazing she really is. I was having a busy night shift and was going back and forth between rooms for hours without a stop. The one patient I had to frequently go see because he has Down’s Syndrome with an epidural, IV fluids running, foley, and a new urostomy that keeps leaking. With all of these wires, I was anxious he would get tangled or pull at them, especially since the family was sleeping and he was wide awake. I was in his room for what felt like the tenth time in 3 hours and saw he got twisted in his epidural tubing again. I needed a hand to help me untwist him because of his size, and I stepped into the hall to see who could help. Celine (who had her own assignment) was there. She saw the look on my face and immediately came in to help. She helped to untwist him and discovered that the epidural tubing had been broken off. He was also trying to get out of the bed to see his parents on the other side of the room and had taken his leads off. While I stepped out of the room to request for a sitter and for the pain team to come to the bedside, Celine offered to stay and sit with the patient for a while putting his stickers on and get him back to the bed. When I came back into the room, he looked as good as new. Celine even, without having to be asked, grabbed the Martti and updated Mom in Spanish about what happened/the plan for the night while I was handling all of the stuff in the background. She also stayed with the patient until the sitter came so I could give medications to my other patients. It probably seemed like a small act of kindness to Celine, but it meant a lot to me. She is always helping whenever she can! Working at Starbucks previously, she frequently brought in coffee for staff to make our shift better. Celine truly makes our floor better and makes me want to be a better nurse! This DAISY Award is the least I could do to show my appreciation for her!
