Chelsea’s empathy and obvious heart for her work made all the difference on a day when we were feeling discouraged and hopeless.
My 5-year-old son came to TCH following a fall which resulted in a skull fracture and concussion. He had a headache that went on for days without relief, he slept all the time, and wasn’t eating or drinking. We were stuck in limbo not knowing how long this would last, not being able to go home until he could eat and drink, and not knowing if this was a normal response to what was going on. While all of my son’s nurses did an excellent job, Chelsea just had something extra special about her. It wasn’t any ONE thing she did it was HOW she did EVERYTHING. She connected with my son in a way that made her care feel personal and made us feel safe. We’d already been there for 4 days by the time Chelsea cared for us and each day we thought would be the day we’d go home. While I know he received excellent medical care always, Chelsea’s empathy and obvious heart for her work made all the difference on a day when we were feeling discouraged and hopeless. As a nurse myself I know it can be easy to fall into a routine of just getting the work done to get through your shift. Chelsea had a way of making us feel like there was nowhere she’d rather be and that is the kind of nurse I strive to be and for sure the kind of nurse a sick or injured child needs. Thank you Chelsea for being a bright spot in a gloomy situation and being a shining representative of the nursing profession.
