I read for the first time yesterday information concerning the DAISY Program. What a wonderful way to commend the hardworking nurses in our various communities! They labor day in, and day out in so many different capacities.
My nomination goes to Chelsea Anderson. She is part of the Infusion Unit team at the Hahne Cancer Center, PH Dubois. I will set out some details on why.
My very first infusion of any kind was in May 2019. I figured that was a one-shot deal that wouldn't need to be repeated at any future point in time. Unfortunately, I was wrong. My cancer (a type of leukemia) advanced to Stage 2 and I began monthly infusions in October 2019.
Each time, the nurses handled things well. I finished my last of 6 monthly infusions yesterday, almost a year after my first infusion. Chelsea only cared for me on my last visit. She was not just kind, but very attentive to every detail. For instance, any questions I had were answered as quickly as possible. Chelsea also clearly explained why the "extra tests" that day were being ordered. This extended the time frame for my day. Still, she frequently came by to check on me. I had written a brief "thank you note" for the entire nursing staff in the infusion unit. It was obvious that they all appreciated it greatly. I'm not one to "butter people up." The note was how I really felt inside, and I wanted them to know that.
When the infusion was completed, a nurse came over to me with "the bell ". She proudly announced, "everyone, this is D's last infusion today!" I rang the bell 3 times. 4 nurses, including Chelsea, lined up for hugs. I felt like a king for the day. Chelsea handled the discharge paperwork nicely. I just felt like she went "above and beyond" the necessary concerns and time markers yesterday. She knew it was a big day for me, and it felt much bigger, thanks to her specific care and love.
Each nurse there covers a lot of ground and deserves recognition. Hopefully, Chelsea can be considered for the DAISY Award for the reasons I just described. I can't say enough about her exemplary attitude and actions. Chelsea is a credit to your team and hospital.
