Cheri is a fabulous nurse and has shown great loyalty to Mount Carmel and the General Medical Surgical unit by spending the last 20 years of her career on this unit. When asked about her feelings working here on any given day, she would tell you that this feels like her family. Cheri is not only loyal to her co-workers but shows the same loyalty when advocating for her patients. I remember a specific situation when one of her patients had a death in their family, and it was imperative to the patient that they attend the funeral. The physician caring for the patient refused to discharge the patient after the patient explained the situation during rounds. Later that shift after talking with the patient Cheri realized the importance of this patient attending this funeral and understood that if the patient did not attend this could have a negative impact on the patient for the rest of their life. Cheri then began calling the physician and helping to coordinate care for the patient so the patient could be released to attend this important event. By doing this, Cheri was promoting patient safety by assuring the patient had a plan at discharge rather than signing out AMA due to frustration. This also showed compassion toward the patient as an individual human being with specific needs.
