Nursing is an art that encompasses critical thinking, compassion, and resiliency. As a nurse, I am accustomed to being the caregiver, but I am unfamiliar with the vulnerable role of being on the patient side. My dad experienced a bowel perforation and needed emergency surgery. When we arrived in the perioperative area, we were greeted by Cheyenne, who was going to be my dad's nurse in the operating room. She helped explain to my dad what the operation was going to be like and what to expect after the surgery. This nurse proved to have exemplary knowledge of the perioperative setting. Cheyenne was very professional and compassionate. She made me feel safe and cared for during this difficult situation. Sometimes being a nurse inevitably makes you think of all the things that have gone wrong with patients before. These thoughts started to swirl in my head as they were about to roll back with my dad, but Cheyenne calmed me down, hugged me and assured me that the perioperative team was going to take good care of him. I am so thankful for the perioperative team and this nurse, specifically for displaying critical thinking skills, compassionate care, and professionalism.
