She was more than just my nurse; she was my advocate, guide, and rock. She was the first to step in whenever miscommunications arose, ensuring my voice was heard and my needs were met.
Being in the hospital for over seventy days during one of the hardest times of my life was nothing short of overwhelming. It wasn't just about spending my 16th birthday in a hospital bed- it was coming to terms with the reality that I wouldn't be walking again, at least for the foreseeable future. Every day was filled with struggles to relearn the simplest tasks, like eating and performing basic movements, all while grappling with the emotional toll of everything that wasn't working. There were countless moments of frustration and despair, times when it felt like I was stuck in an endless cycle of setbacks and miscommunications. But then, there was Cheyenne Kane. She was more than just my nurse; she was my advocate, guide, and rock. She was the first to step in whenever miscommunications arose, ensuring my voice was heard and my needs were met. She listened not just to my words but to my fears, my frustrations, and even the things I couldn't articulate.
In a world where I often felt powerless, Cheyenne gave me back a sense of control. She never treated me as just another patient. Whether it was sitting with me through the most difficult days, encouraging me when everything felt impossible, or sharing lighthearted moments like popsicle breaks, she brought warmth and humanity to an otherwise cold and clinical experience. One moment I'll never forget was Halloween. I couldn't be outside having fun like everyone else, but Cheyenne didn't let that stop me from having a good time. Make-A-Wish had sent over some things, but most of it was geared toward little kids, and I didn't see anything that felt right for me or would even fit. It could have been a disappointing moment, but Cheyenne turned it into something creative and fun. Together, we scavenged the hospital to pull together a makeshift costume. To top it all off, I got a signed jersey from the Chicago Fire soccer team. It wasn't traditional or fancy, but it was exactly what I needed- a chance to feel included, laugh, and make the best of a situation that could have easily been another letdown.
Beyond the small, lighthearted moments, Cheyenne was there for the harder, practical challenges, too, staying in my room after shift change to ensure I was all right. When my leg required a special configuration to fit in the wheelchair properly, she didn't hesitate to step in and help figure it out. She made sure that I was comfortable, supported, and able to navigate the hospital as smoothly as possible. To this day, I don't think words can fully express the depth of my gratitude. Cheyenne, you weren't just there every step of the way- you were one of the biggest reasons I was able to keep moving forward. Thank you for believing in me when it felt like everything else was falling apart. You are a true example of what nursing should be. Thank you so much.
