Since day one, Chris has arrived to work every day with the outlook of "How can I make things better for both patients, families, and the nurses at the bedside?"
Chris is a Clinical Practice Manager in the PICU. He came to us after being a nurse in the ED and a manager in COVID Operations. Chris began in his role in PICU during a time of leadership upheaval. I sat on Chris's interview panel and admittedly felt nervous recommending someone with no ICU experience for the CPM role. Ultimately, our panel was very impressed with Chris's level of dedication to nursing and all of his examples of advocacy in previous roles. I am so thankful that Chris was ultimately chosen for this role.

Since day one, Chris has arrived to work every day with the outlook of "How can I make things better for both patients, families, and the nurses at the bedside?" Chris genuinely wants to understand what it is like for all members of the care team at the bedside. He is not afraid to jump into hard conversations, whether that be with a nurse or a family member. He is direct and clear in communication. Chris consistently follows through when concerns are raised. His consistency allows the nurses to know that he is not just merely listening but that he will take action.

In addition to Chris's listening, consistency, directness, and follow-through, one of the other characteristics that makes Chris a fantastic leader is his humility. I have approached Chris regarding a decision he made that had unintentional consequences that impacted my shift. Chris completely owned his decision, apologized, and worked to come up with a new plan.

I believe I am speaking for the entire charge nurse team when I say that I have never worked for a manager who so wonderfully embodies authentic leadership. I wholeheartedly believe Chris deserves this award and much more.
