Christa Clay embodies every attribute a DAISY leader should have. She had struggles on her unit, not only with staff but also patient satisfaction. She knew a change was needed and believed that as the manager it had to start with her. Christa prayed for guidance and took it back to her Mercy roots. Christa looked to Catherine as an example and our Mercy values. For someone to look within themselves as a leader to begin a change is a humbling task and is never easy.
She reassures her staff consistently that they are the patient experience, and that what they bring to the unit matters. Her huddles and gambas are collaborative, allowing her staff to not only have a voice but know their input matters. She has taken a culture of tension and mistrust, turning it into a community of mutual respect.
Every patient Christa interacts with is shown the utmost dignity and compassion, regardless of their situation. She has spent significant time rounding to ensure her patients know a leader is present and available. This validates their feelings and gives confidence that any concerns will promptly be addressed. Christa does a great job of taking real-time coaching and making sure her coworkers never feel it is punitive. She gives her heart to her unit and patients, showing each day her passion for the ministry.
Christa is a champion for her patients and coworkers, always standing up for what is best for both. Her scores over the last eight-plus months have continued to soar. As of this nomination, her unit leads the hospital with the highest bedside shift report scores. I am constantly amazed at her dedication and drive. Christa is not only an example to her staff, but to all who serve with her. I for one am proud to do so.
