One example of how Christie provides excellent care occurred earlier this year. Following surgery, a young patient had four episodes of vocal cord spasms. Additionally, his heart rate dropped to a dangerously low level that threatened his life. Christie and a variety of other team members worked tirelessly to monitor this precious patient continuously. She tried numerous times to wean him off of oxygen but was unable to do so safely. Her lack of success during this unique incident did not affect her determination to provide top-notch care.
After four more hours of continuous monitoring, the young patient was not sufficiently stable, and Christie became concerned about what she was reading on his heart monitor. She immediately notified his physician who made the call to have him transferred to a nearby facility that specializes in pediatric care. Although the transfer process lasted 2 ½ hours, Christie stayed with the patient the entire time - long past her scheduled work hours - and continued to care for him until he was taken by ambulance.
Throughout this ordeal, Christie maintained her composure and professionalism. She kept his physicians and family informed of his status at all times. Christie's manager, said, "This was a very delicate situation. Christie remained acutely aware of his every change from second to second, then calmly and competently responded to the situation appropriately. I am very proud to have such a bright, caring and competent nurse on our PACU team. Changing lives for the better together!"
