Christina Deel came to my rescue with my patient, who was acting out, which appeared to be a stroke. The family came emergently with a 14-year-old. When they arrived, the patient had just returned from CT and began acting out. The child was distraught and fearful. Christina came to the rescue and distracted her from the commotion. She took her away from the emotional scene to the cafeteria and used her own money to purchase some ice cream and M&M’s to take her out of the strained environment she did not need to be witness to. We were all behind from the stroke call with lots to do and other patients and families to care for, but Christina went above and beyond for this kid in so many ways with distraction and support when it was needed the most. She treated her like a good mother would treat her child in the most difficult times. As a peer, her acts of selflessness and kindness made me proud of my profession in nursing and how, each day, people like her give graciously to our patients and their family members.
