While I walked through ICU, I observed a beautiful and heartwarming example of what nursing is all about. There in a patient's room, in darkness with only the lights from the monitors and pump equipment, sat Christina. I watched as she sat quietly holding his hand. Patiently and compassionately, she provided comfort and calmed the patient. When I asked her why she was sitting there; Christina explained she sat there to calm a very anxious patient rather than using sedation. She explained that the sedation would cause his blood pressure to drop and she would have to increase another medication already affecting his peripheral circulation. She took the longer and compassionate route to better service her patient. She unknowingly made me very proud to see a beautiful example of what nursing is all about. Thank you for showing a nurse with over 40 years' experience that one of the reasons, she went into the profession is alive and well.
