Chris is an astute clinician who can turn on a dime when there are urgent patient situations. She is considered an “angel” by her peers. She makes deep connections with her patients.
Role Model Compassionate Care:
Chris Drew has worked at YNHH for 33 and ½ years. She is one of the senior staff nurses on the NP 8 Infusion Center and can make each patient she treats feel as if they are the only patient on the unit. Chris has the uncanny ability to remember details about each patient she cares for. She introduced her managers to a young patient with GI cancer who was going to law school and made a special point to ensure his treatment was completed in a timely manner so he could join his study group. She can meet each patient where they are and has the ability to relate to a patient, whether they are a 26-year-old or an 86-year-old.

She can relate to a patient who has very few resources, advocates for the patient, and, as the late RN, personally escorts them to the Smilow entrance for their Veyo ride at the end of their treatment. She also can relate to the millionaire and ensures every comfort is available to him. She is tireless in that she always volunteers to stay late, works Christmas so her peers with small children can have the holiday off, and joyfully accepts any assignment that she is asked to do. Chris also takes care of her teammates, she is the first to ensure a sympathy card is collected when there is a death in the family, organizes a collection and a food train delivered to a co-workers home when they are diagnosed with cancer, and is generous with her home and her pool in the summer so colleagues with children can relax and rejuvenate. Chris volunteered to be a unit ambassador for combining two disease teams on one infusion unit and it was her gravitas that encouraged the team to function as one unit.

Chris is a mentor to her fellow nurses. When an experienced infusion RN started her orientation on NP 7 for weekends and cared for a medical oncology patient, Chris was willing to assist, provide guidance in a non-judgmental manner. Chris is also the sort of colleague that covers. When an infusion RN was sick with Covid and had a slow recovery (her entire home including spouse and children all were Covid positive), Chris jumped in to cover her weekend so the nurse could rest and recover. When there is an adult medical emergency, Chris is always there and willing to actively participate, even when she is not the primary nurse for that patient.

Special Connection:
Chris had an 80-year-old head and neck cancer patient who was so happy to leave the infusion unit (but sad to leave Chris) that he opened his phone app, played “Set me free, why don’t you Babe” on his phone, and danced in his chair. Chris participated in the dance with him and shared the story and video at a staff meeting.

Significant Difference:
Chris Drew is an astute clinician who can turn on a dime when there are urgent patient situations. There was a patient who had Sinus Ventricular Tachycardia, and she personally escorted and transported the patient to the ED with her nursing colleague. She is a collaborator, and is always available for hypersensitivity reactions, 2nd nurse verification or to start an IV line on a patient with challenging veins. Chris Drew provides moral support to her nursing colleagues, ACAs, BA, and the entire multidisciplinary team.

Chris is considered an “angel” by her peers. She makes deep connections with her patients. One patient, FC, had not eaten for a few days, and she made sure he had sandwiches and snacks. She attended not only to his chemotherapy needs but also to his nutrition and psycho-social support needs. She has the gifted ability to remember each patient’s personal situation and always made sure to ask about FC’s pet cat. Another patient, SF, had no family or support system, and did not know how to access resources. Chris made sure he had a SW referral and was his confidant when he came for chemotherapy. She is an active listener who genuinely cares for her patients’ well-being. We whole heartedly support her nomination for the DAISY Award.
