This week in the MICU I cared for a patient who ultimately ended up donating their kidneys.
It was an emotional day for the family and friends of the patient, as well as the staff in the MICU. The patient's sister was able to follow the patient into the OR until Cardiac death.
The sister held his hand and sung "Oh Danny Boy" while he took his last breath. Ciera joined in with her in singing the song as the sister was crying her way through it and could not get the words out.
It was a beautiful moment and his sister was overwhelmed with gratitude. I think she should be recognized for her compassion for this patient. It was a moment where I felt proud to be a nurse and I was really impressed with the level of compassion and caring from the OR staff as a whole.
