Cindy Kerr has devoted her time working in cardiac catheterization (cath) labs in south central Kansas. Since 2008, her devotion to those health pursuits has been in service to NMC, efforts that has not gone unnoticed.
Cindy was nominated for the DAISY Award by a patient who was in a very difficult situation, being transferred out of the medical center and Cindy helped the patient through this. The patient was so scared. Her life was on the line, and Cindy really stepped up and made the patient feel comfortable. Cindy went above and beyond to provide exemplary care to the patient.
"Being there and taking care of others just comes with the territory", Cindy said. The caregiver is just one of the many roles nurses fill, and one Cindy admits she truly enjoys. In fact, it was her role as a caregiver for her own parents, who both suffered from heart disease, that pushed her to work in cardiology departments.
As a nurse for the NMC cath lab, Cindy handles sedation and assists on the surgical floor with the cardiologists, something she is more than happy to do because of the overall impact the work they do has on an individual's health.
"When you find out somebody has heart disease, it involves all aspects of their life and every organ. If we can take care of the heart and get it healed, the other things can follow along", said Cindy.
Making the commute from her native McPherson County throughout her career, Cindy admitted she has long been drawn to working for NMC. Even when she worked in Wichita, her family doctor was in Newton. Since joining the staff, seeing the two-way street of support that flows seamlessly between the hospital and the community has only helped reinforce that career decision.
Numerous times, Cindy noted she has heard from patients how much they love the hospital, and staff pays that forward with a lot of volunteer work — which is greatly encouraged — around Newton. Cindy herself noted she routinely commits to helping with blood pressure checks for local Fire/EMS staff done twice a year and she was happy to assist with the health festival last fall during the Newton YMCA's open house.
Dedication to a life of service means having an impact in the community almost comes with the territory, but the volunteer work the medical center so strongly encourages can make a difference no matter who is doing it.
