I have watched Claire Kainer go above and beyond in her clinical duties. Her interactions with patients and family members consistently demonstrates the core values of Children's Health.
There is a particular time I would like shine the spotlight on. It was with a scared, temper-tantrum tossing, 5 year old hem/onc patient. Blood was needed for labs and there was an issue with drawing back from his port. A straight stick was in order and the patient was not having it. I watched as Claire calmly and gently spoke with this upset screaming 5 year old. She didn't once show frustration, anger or lose her composure. She spoke to him on his level, gave him options, calmed him down, built his and his mother's trust and was able to get the job done. With no mistakes, one stick and minimum hold help she was able to get the blood needed. After the blood was drawn you could tell the patient's level of respect for her sky-rocketed.
To fast forward in their care, TPA was to be given through his port. I listened as she not only explained the procedure, but describe the reason why to the mother and patient with remarkable clarity and understanding. She explained it in such a way that there were no questions needing to be asked. With her knowledge and understanding she was able to put the mother and patient at ease yet again. Before it was time for the patient to leave, heparin needed to be given through his port. She took the initiative to call the charge nurse of D6 to gain clarity and understanding of the procedure to make sure she was doing it correctly.
Claire's entire interaction with this family demonstrated Children's core values; Selfless Service, a Commitment to Excellence, Passionate Advocacy and Unwavering Integrity. She provides this service to all her patients and deserves to be recognized for her spirit of excellence.
