He was unbelievably respectful and made sure my family had complete privacy with my mom. He advocated for my mom with her doctors and showed unwavering support for the end-of-life decisions my mom made.
My family was blessed to have Cole as my mother's nurse for the last three nights of her life in early November. My mom adored Cole and was so happy to know that it was him who would be with her. Staying overnight with my mom allowed me to have the privilege of witnessing the care Cole provided my mother. While my mom had many excellent nurses during her various stays at Lancaster General, Cole was, by far, the best. That is why I believe he is most deserving of a DAISY Award.
Cole was more than kind towards my family. He truly showed he cared about my mom's well-being. When my mother was uncomfortable in bed, Cole spent the time finding a position and continued to do so each time my mom asked. Each night, Cole consistently checked on my mom and me. He made sure my mom had what she needed as well as asked me if there was anything I needed. When my mom made the decision to become DNR and simply receive pain medication, Cole was there EVERY hour on the hour to administer her medication. He was unbelievably respectful and made sure my family had complete privacy with my mom. He advocated for my mom with her doctors and showed unwavering support for the end-of-life decisions my mom made. At the moment my mom's heart rate dropped, Cole immediately came to the room, assessed the situation, and gave me the opportunity to be alone with my mom while she passed. After she passed, he waited for my brothers to arrive at the hospital and gave us all the time we needed with her. Even in dealing with the paperwork afterwards, Cole showed us so much kindness, empathy and compassion.
Cole is more than an excellent nurse. Cole is an angel here on Earth, and my mom was blessed to have watched over her. My family could not have wished for a more compassionate, engaging, committed nurse. For the rest of our lives, my family will never forget Cole and all he did for my mom.
