Collette is new in her leadership position and her primary role has been "air traffic control" in the Operating Room. There are many variables to consider before surgery starts and Collette makes it look fairly seamless. Collette will never leave a staff member alone and if she has an inkling they are scared, nervous, need a little support or just need a boost of confidence, she will stay to make sure everything is OK before she goes home.
Recently our department received two back to back critically ill trauma patients. Collette stayed to assist her team and was running between two rooms, calling in additional staff, opening instruments, arranging blood products and medications for these two patients, all while directing novice nurses in the department. Within an hour, everything was stable, but for that one hour it is people like Collette, that you can count on to provide support to staff and ensure safe patient care.
