It was not her competency that was so impressive; you learn to expect that from St. Luke's Hospital's nursing staff. It was the kind, sensitive, and surprisingly prompt way Cristen applied those healthcare skills. Her personal demeanor and medical responsiveness were both so absolutely pitch perfect. When asked a medical question, for example, she moved forward and spoke with gentle and clear authority, always clarifying what she did or did not know, could or could not say with certainty; her obvious honesty was as appropriate as welcome. If she could not accomplish a specific medical task herself, she found someone who could--in a New York minute. When a healthcare situation became serious, her nursing technique was enhanced by a truly impressive and respectful quiet tone, with purposeful step-back distance added to avoid interfering with difficult family emotions. In other words, she was there if needed, not there if best. How amazing her professional contribution! In short, Cristen Duvall, while putting in what others might see as just "another day at the office," exhibited a degree of hospice skill, hospital nursing technique, and basic human empathy that will live forever with the family she did her best to serve. Her competence is a joy to behold.
