Crystal embodies the qualities of a true nursing leader. Her personable nature, dedication to teamwork, and commitment to patient-centered care make her an invaluable asset to our unit.
Crystal has been a wonderful nurse manager since I started here on 2N 2.5 years ago. Since being here, she has helped mentor not just myself but a lot of my peers on 2N. The number of times I have gone to her office with a random question about a policy or situation and she has been able to find an answer has been countless. She’s shown me numerous resources to be successful since entering the charge nurse role to help mentor, teach, and develop the staff on the floor. If she doesn’t have an answer, she will use her resources to help find the answer as well. Crystal is always looking for a way to create the safest patient care, trust, and compassion in the unit. Since I have been here for 2.5 years, Crystal has been able to identify and pinpoint certain ways to improve patient care.
A great example of this is going from 5 CAUTIs down to 0 so far for the year. Crystal is always upbeat and positive when she is on the unit, asking if staff members need help cleaning and helping organize the unit when we are all busy. She helps lead by example and sets realistic standards that are achievable by staff. She’s been exemplary in hiring staff members who have similar personality traits on the unit to help create a more caring and compassionate environment for the patients we care for on 2N. There’s a strong sense of belonging in the unit, and we all feel like we have a sense of purpose and belonging when going to work each day. This has developed into excellent teamwork on 2N, which then translates to the patients we care for. The environment has helped to retain staff and lead to better education and quality of care standards for the ewer nurses we have on the floor, too. Crystal has been a key part of the reason many of us have stayed on 2N for the many years some of us have.
