She hoped these items would help her feel cared for and loved. The next day, she gave her the bag of goodies and reassured her that she was loved. The tears of gratitude and seeing her later happily using the items made Cynthia's heart swell with joy.
I would like to nominate Cynthia Bailey for the DAISY Award for the exceptional care and compassion she demonstrated towards a patient, a pre-surgical trans woman, who was admitted to our hospital after a serious car accident. She had suffered multiple injuries, including a broken leg, and was visibly in distress. As Cynthia attended to her, the patient opened up about the emotional pain she was experiencing. She shared that her family had disowned her when she came out, and despite her injuries, her father refused to speak to her. Recognizing the deep emotional pain the patient was enduring, Cynthia provided unwavering support. She spent as much time with her as possible, trying to offer some comfort in the absence of her family.

The patient's distressed state was compounded by her wig, which was in disarray and seemed to symbolize the turmoil in her life. Seeing her frustration and sadness, Cynthia felt compelled to do something beyond her usual duties. After her shift, Cynthia went out of her way to buy hair accessories, scrunchies, clips, a brush, an ornate hand mirror, nail polish, manicure supplies, and shower gels. She hoped these items would help her feel cared for and loved. The next day, she gave her the bag of goodies and reassured her that she was loved. The tears of gratitude and seeing her later happily using the items made Cynthia's heart swell with joy. Her transformation from a woman overwhelmed by both physical pain and emotional abandonment to someone who could smile and take pride in her appearance was profound.

Later, the patient wrote a heartfelt letter to Cynthia, which concluded with, "You don’t just help people, you change lives." This letter still hangs on Cynthia's refrigerator as a testament to the impact she had on her life. Cynthia’s commitment to her patients is made even more remarkable by her personal sacrifices. Cynthia’s actions went beyond the typical duties of a nurse. Her empathy, kindness, and dedication to making a positive difference in this patient's life exemplify the qualities that the DAISY Award celebrates. For her extraordinary efforts to provide both physical and emotional care, I wholeheartedly nominate Cynthia Bailey for this prestigious award.
