This nurse stepped up, gowned up, and took one for the team, going straight into the room and attempting to de-matte the hair rather than shaving the patient’s head.
The patient came in tonight complaining of head pain/ possible wound. Unfortunately, provider could not observe scalp or note any injuries to head due to severely matted hair and thousands of lice and louse.
The situation was so horrific that the provider recommended that the patient shave her head as that would be the only way to treat her possible wounds. This nurse stepped up, gowned up, and took one for the team, going straight into the room and attempting to de-matte the hair rather than shaving the patient’s head.
Once completed, the head was cleansed and treated with appropriate medication. Given the circumstances, providers were able to give the best care imaginable. The patient was relieved, happy, and able to relax without feeling itchy and embarrassed. This nurse spent two hours, if not longer, working with this lady, providing hair care and emotional support. She is an outstanding example of what it means to be a nurse!
