Ms. Daniela Herrera always knew that she wanted to be a nurse. Caring for her terminally ill father and being surrounded by exceptional nurses who cared for him helped to motivate her decision. She felt the odds were against her being an older nurse entering nursing school. However she was determined to make a difference, one patient at a time. I’ve observed Daniela reaching out to the pharmacy for a patient who came into the Geriatric clinic crying that she couldn’t sleep secondary to her not being able to get her depression medication refill. Daniela contacted the pharmacy and learned that the patient discarded the bottle in error. She informed the patient that the only option, as per the pharmacy, was to pay out of pocket. The crying patient stated that she was willing to pay anything if it meant that she could just sleep. Daniela went a step further and contacted several pharmacies to ensure that the patient paid the best price since she was on a fixed income. The first pharmacy’s price was $51.98 and the best price found after several calls was $18.99 for the same medication. Daniela reached out to the Geriatric provider to request that an electronic prescription be sent to that pharmacy. The patient and her home health aide were so appreciative. Daniela was so delighted that she was able to help the patient.
