Daphne consistently seeks out opportunities to engage nurses in achieving the mission of ECU Health.
Experience: On Monday, May 30th this nurse leader, Dr. Daphne Brewington, kicked off the first ever nurse manager advisory council and staff nurse advisory council. This nurse leader believes that the best way to create a sustainable future for nurses is to hear directly from the frontline nurses and nurse leaders in the practice environment that care for our patients every day to learn what matters most to our nurses. She has gathered together nurse managers and staff nurses with various years of experience and clinical specialties designed with a purpose to reimagine and transform the future of nursing professional practice through an immersive, networking experience while serving as mentors to the chief nurse.
The energy in the room has been “electrifying” and “invigorating”. As a nurse leader, I am so grateful that our chief nurse promotes two-way communication and nurse autonomy. These nurses will be leading projects that they’ve selected to improve the nursing practice environment. This chief nurse will serve as a support to ensure they have what they need to lead the work that they believe will be most meaningful to nursing practice!
Over the last two years, this nurse leader has served as the executive sponsor to implement the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) program for life support training. This program has now rolled out across all of the ECU Health entities. This nurse leader advocated all the way up to the hospital presidents because she believed in the positive impact this would have on improving patient survival, team member experience with training and resulting in a reduction in finances for the organization. Since implementation of RQI, organizational cost savings is estimated at $1,406,328.04 for the organization.
Quality: This nurse leader leads with authenticity and grace. She has shared her own personal desire to improve the health and well-being specifically of the mental health population of eastern North Carolina. This has been one of her drivers for advocating for the opening of the new eight-bed Hybrid Complex Medical Unit in February 2022. This unit is designed with an interprofessional team that provides a keen focus on not only the complex medical needs of the patient but also holistic care to meet the mental health needs of the patients. Overall, Daphne, consistently seeks out opportunities to engage nurses in achieving the mission of ECU Health. Whether it is assisting team members with monitoring the “chat” during a virtual meeting or out in the committee participating in scholarship funds; she seeks out opportunities to improve the health and well-being of all mankind! For nurses’ month, she personally donated finances to ensure gifts were able to be provided weekly to recognize nursing excellence in a random drawing. This nurse leader is the epitome of a DAISY Nurse Leader, delivering on her promise to make sure our nurses have what they need to provide excellent, high-quality patient care!
