As a manager, I take several complaints and compliments about nursing care each shift, all with special traits, but one about Dario stood out amongst the rest.
A woman called to speak to me about the most caring and warm nurse she had ever had, Dario. After a heart cath and small stroke, this patient described how weak and helpless she felt. She talked about the most mortifying, embarrassing day of her life as she could not walk to the bathroom and had an accidental bowel movement in bed. With tears in her eyes she described how Dario's gentle approach and supportive kind words ease her suffering and when she apologized for needing so much care, Dario told her "I am here because I want to help you."
She was then hungry, as she had just returned late from her procedure. Dario made a special trip to the cafeteria and got a warm meal. The best comment she made that made my heart (and eyes) swell up was when she stated, "I don't know why he treated me as if I was his own grandmother, but no one has ever shown me the kindness he did last night."
What an amazing opportunity as nurses we have to touch lives in their most vulnerable moment. Dario went above and beyond for this patient and changes her entire life by his efforts.
