Mr. Ellner's care and support during my time in the ED was and above anything I could have expected or hoped for.
I experienced my first true medical emergency ever. I had trouble speaking and reading. I was scared. I didn't know what to do. I arrived at the emergency department and was immediately brought back to the treatment room and a "stroke code" was initiated. Many things happened very quickly. Mr. David Ellner was my Nurse throughout my entire 4-hour stay at the emergency department. Mr. Ellner stayed with me the whole time in the emergency department and the whole way from my bedside to the CT scan and back. Mr. Ellner could see how scared I was and stayed by my side for the whole experience, offering great comfort and explanation of what was happening every step of the way so that there were no surprises or apprehension about what was happening. In addition to the outstanding emotional support, Mr. Ellner performed his part of the stroke code and the various functions such as taking vitals, monitoring the progression of my care, performing emergency-related functions, and providing medication with effortless practice expertise and astounding skill. Mr. Ellner treated me like a person, not a patient. He conversed with me about my time in the Navy and my current job and showed genuine interest in me as a person, which made me feel that I was important and valued. When it came time for me to call my wife and notify her that I was in the ED, I was very choked up, and I didn't feel like I could keep it together when speaking with her. Mr. Ellner asked if I would like him to speak with my wife to apprise her of the situation, which I did, and I gave him permission to do so. Mr. Ellner's care and support during my time in the ED was and above anything I could have expected or hoped for. His Skill, compassion, empathy, and treatment of the "person", instead of the "patient", made all the difference and made my visit to the ED in a a time of personal crisis the best possible experience one could hope for. Thank you, Mr. Ellner.
