I have worked with Dave since the hospital opened. Dave has always been a firm foundation of knowledge and support for the entire team. I am even more impressed and inspired after witnessing his kindness, knowledge, and leadership in action for perhaps the millionth time. The past few weeks have been very difficult for our team with a violent, detained psychiatric patient with multiple code grays (sometimes 6 in one shift). Our safety has been a daily concern as well as the patient's care and well-being. Balancing the needs of all is what Dave is an absolute expert is at. He has responded to every code gray called, leading the team and engaging the patient to assist in safely calming the situation down. On a day that this patient's primary nurse was especially affected by patient care decisions of the day before, Dave wisely suggested that the RN join the leadership team during the threat assessment. During that conference, the nurse shared fears about patient care decisions and worry that the decisions had adversely affected the patient and the outcome of a court appearance. I watched as Dave listened patiently and then reassured the nurse that the decisions were appropriate. I saw the relief and confidence return. It is something I feel privileged to have witnessed as it was also a teaching moment for me. Dave continues to lead, guide and support the team as this patient continues in our care. All the staff feel safe and supported when he is on shift, not only in this difficult situation but in all situations. His knowledge, wisdom, and humor are greatly appreciated by all of us. Any shift is better with Dave at the helm.
