Although I have heard many times what a gem Dawn is to have on the Labor & Delivery team, I experienced it firsthand today. After a very busy night with high acuity and high risk patients, a new graduate on her 3rdnight off of orientation was tearful and visibly overwhelmed as she finally sat down at the computer to catch up on her documentation. Many staff members asked her if she was okay or if they could do anything to assist her, and they spoke encouraging words to her. Then, Dawn, an experienced Labor & Delivery RN, kneeled down beside her and spoke softly and gently to her. Dawn rubbed her back and said things like: "You're in a tough place now, but you are going to make it through this" and "We are all here to support you". I was so moved by this gesture that I became teary-eyed. We all know how hard we have to work to care for our patients, but if you don't care for yourself and each other, it becomes very difficult to survive a stressful work environment. It's very difficult to have 2 patients in 1 when one of them you can't even see, and it's up to our fellow team members to recognize this struggle and offer support when needed. Dawn is a definite role model for showing compassionate care to her patients and coworkers alike. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
