Nurse Dawn Chavez has always been very pleasant to work with but recently she went above and beyond for my family and me. I was in the middle of being induced with my second son due to preeclampsia. I started to feel really nauseous and shaky when my husband called for a nurse to come to the room. My assigned nurse came into the room and stated that she wanted to check my cervix because my symptoms sounded like I was transitioning and might be ready for delivery soon. When she went to check my cervix she realized I had a prolapsed umbilical cord. I could tell she was trying to remain calm but I also could see the panic starting to set in as she called for help. Nurse Dawn entered the room and immediately realized what was happening. She quickly yelled for someone to call for a code violet. She then jumped on the bed with me and took charge by calmly telling me we are going for a C-section. She held the baby's head off of the umbilical cord as we went to the OR. She began tapping the baby's heartbeat on my arm with her free hand and said, "This is his heartbeat" as a way to reassure me that he was okay. Dawn continued to talk to me during the C-section to calm me down. Once the baby was born she made a point to come look me in the face to reassure me and once again that everything was going to be fine. She also came in to check on me several times after I returned to my room even though she was not my assigned nurse. The whole labor and delivery, and code violet teams were amazing but I truly believe the reason my son was born quickly and healthy was because of the quick, take charge actions of Nurse Dawn. She saved my son's life and for this, my family will always be grateful!
