My brother came into the ER with vertigo, vomiting, and sever hypertension and his BP was near 200/100 at at times greater. While his CT was negative, my concern for an ischemic stroke was a very huge concern. Communicating through text message with my brother's girlfriend all day begging them to order an MRI was dismissed. One doctor even said the CT was negative and he's too young. On the National Stroke Association stroke risk score card my brother was in the red zone (high risk). No one in the ER would call me either, despite my current role as nurse manager at a primary stroke center. So, I drove up to MSFSMC and met Deb, his new floor nurse. I explained my concerns, she went immediately to the ER Resident to advocate for her patient and had apparently involved her charge nurse. An MRI was ordered and my brother was transferred to the neuro-tele unit with more frequent neurological checks. The MRI came back positive for ischemic stroke in the cerebellum. He was moved to the ICU. Deb listened, thought critically, advocated for her patient, and was directly responsible for my brother's initial, incorrect, diagnosis being corrected.
