Debbie went over and above taking care of an ICU patient. The patient's wife called our department inquiring about her 80 year old husband. The surgeon hadn't spoken to family, the wife had no ride to get to the hospital. In addition to providing high quality ICU care to the intubated patient, Debbie called the surgeon's office to find someone to talk to the wife, she called the medical doctor's office to speak to the wife as well as stating her inability to get to the hospital. Instead of a nurse doing social service work, the patient really needs the care of the nurse. Debbie felt the wife is a part of the patient's needs so she pulled in the medical attending to help complete the family unit.
