After a little cleaning in the ER, I was left with my burn drying out. When brought upstairs, Debbie had introduced herself and asked what hurt. I said the air. She got me a damp towel to help a little. She did my first wound care. She was thorough while trying to be gentle. It naturally hurt really badly, but she made small talk with me when she first met me and continued to do this through the cleaning. She was empathetic to my pain, trying the only thing she could to distract me from the pain, while focusing on the task at hand for the benefit of my overall health. She did everything she could all night to keep me comfortable. She was not only interested in my recovery, but in who I was. She made me feel comfortable and like I had a friend when I was terrified of hospitals. In the morning, she taught me how to order food, even though it was very close to her shift change. Then before I met my next nurse, she had not only informed her of my condition and how it happened, she told the nurse how I preferred a dark room, that I liked orange juice. Even that my boyfriend and I had been together since we were little. I feel that this made the connection between me and my next nurse a lot more comfortable. She told me about the nurse, how she'd been here for a long time, she was very good at her job, and a nice and sweet person. I appreciate the effort she put into this because I didn't have a chance to talk to the next nurse much as it was day time and the morning nurse had a lot to do. Establishing this connection was so important because it made me more comfortable when she had to help me shower. The next night, Debbie had come in, and besides meds and asking if I needed anything and doing vitals, she took a personal care in checking if my swelling had gone down at all. She also checked my dressings. She saw a whole spot uncovered and put an extra layer on, the tight second layer to help or promote the decrease in swelling. The first day, she had given me a tip on how to keep it extra elevated and the doctor was happy to see me putting in so much effort. That night, she was within two minutes of when I was supposed to take my meds. When they start to wear off, then have to kick back in, it really affects my ability to sleep. The second night, due to her promptness, I slept most of the night straight through. I was surprised but it made me feel great and my gratitude goes to Debbie. All of the staff here were completely amazing. Debbie, though, was outstanding in her work and even better in her personality. She made my experience here better than I could have ever expected. She's not here at Harborview just to work, she's here to do everything she can to make her patient's lives a little better. And I am so sad that on my last night here I do not get to show her my progress, but I figure a review on her outstanding work is a decent way to show my appreciation. Thank you, Debbie. And of all the people I met, you deserve this award!
