When I think of a DAISY, I envision a flower that is both cheerful and enduring. A nurse that holds both of those characteristics is Debra Burnet. Labor and Delivery is a unit where nursing care greatly impacts on labor progress and patient safety. Caring for patients in acute pain is difficult. For L&D, pain is normal. Debra is well versed in providing effective support and comfort measures to patients in active labor. Her care is intimate and direct. She is known for "her position for labor". When I enter my patient's room and see a well controlled mother with a relaxed face, sitting in a bed that looks more like a Lazy-Boy-Recliner than a hospital bed, I know that Debra is our nurse. It is unmistakable. She eagerly involves students in patient Care. What I like best about Debra is her amazing sense of humor. If laughter is the best medicine, than Debra is a true leader. She can make everyone laugh even in the face of great pain. She could have made a good living as a standup comic but she loves being a nurse. When she receives this well deserved honor, you must ask her to tell you about the time she went to her cousin's farm (and had cereal for breakfast) you won't be disappointed.
