She goes beyond being an excellent nurse – she shares her humanity, kindness, and love for her patients.
My sister is a patient at Brigham and Women's Hospital with an aggressive and rare uterine cancer. She also has special needs and cognitive challenges, which have certainly made it harder for her to understand what is happening. This demands a very special form of empathic, caring communication style to grasp what M is saying and to effectively help M comprehend what is occurring in the most appropriate and compassionate ways. Debra is that person and so much more. She has exemplified excellence, empathy, grace, kindness, and has made M feel welcomed and understood with open arms. Debra has embraced all of our family, who are, needless to say, saddened by what M is experiencing. M has never encountered a practitioner like Debra. She consistently tells me – every single day – how much she “loves Deb” and asks, “when can she see her again?” That is extraordinary in my book.

Her follow-through is superb and nothing short of the best. Her time with M has been abundant and warm, and we all feel she is there for M, no matter how long it takes, with total grace and a caring presence. You feel as if you are her only patient, and she devotes as much time as needed. She goes beyond being an excellent nurse – she shares her humanity, kindness, and love for her patients. It does not get better than this. Her attention to her patients is boundless. Debra also exhibits the utmost respect when caring for someone with special needs. She knows intuitively how to communicate and ensure M is comfortable and cared for in the deepest sense.

No matter what training a nurse receives, Debra’s wisdom and experience go far beyond what is expected. She is truly an angel. We have all grown to love Debra – like a family member - and there is nothing better than that in my book. Despite the unfortunate treatments M has had to endure, she always looks forward to seeing Debra, and she brightens up with her like no one else. Again, that is as strong a statement as I can share. Debra has probably touched countless patients and families like ours – but I will always be deeply thankful to her for guiding us through this all – and for being the graceful person she is. She is a gem – an angel, and embodies the most kindness of any medical professional I have met.
