He was able to relieve some of my anxiety with jokes, his smile, and his soothing voice. He was very professional but could have also been a good friend.
DeShawn was outstanding in every way. He observed that I was anxious. I explained that for some reason with all of my surgeries and back procedures I have had, I was especially anxious about this one for some reason and it was the most minor of all I have had done. He was able to relieve some of my anxiety with jokes, his smile, and his soothing voice. He was very professional but could have also been a good friend. It was like I had known him forever. That is how comfortable he made me feel.
Then came the icing on the cake. I am a notoriously hard stick for any blood-related or IV procedure. I have been told to never volunteer for nurses to learn how to draw blood from. I have had IVs in various places on my body. My husband never really believed me until he witnessed it when I had an endoscopic study early in our marriage and it took 3 people to finally get an IV in. DeShawn asked me what had been tried before. I told him everything. I have learned to use deep breathing and not to watch which somewhat helps me to relax. He explained that he would use lidocaine first and there would be a small sting. Well, my husband I thought was making fun of DeShawn and made a comment about the IV and I told him to be nice because I just knew DeShawn would get it. What was funny, was that DeShawn had already performed a miracle, and not only did he get the IV the first time, I never felt it. That was a first.
I can never thank him enough for that morning when I was so anxious. I found out from telling everyone that came in to get me ready how great he was that he had been a trauma ER nurse and then the operating nurse told me, he had been in nursing school with him and he was the best. I can only hope everyone who is very nervous, anxious, or is a hard blood draw, or IV person has DeShawn. If I ever have a procedure there again I hope I can request him.
