Devota would spend time every night explaining what they were doing (different iv bags, and what each did). My husband does not sleep well at home, much less when in the hospital. The first night Devota spent time just chatting with my husband. This interaction helped lower his anxiety level and to see that she truly cared about his condition. She saw the trouble he had trying to sleep and made sure he was able to rest the next night. My husband is faced with a possible cancer diagnosis. This possibility is both shocking and terrifying for the both of us. Devota would not allow either of us to refer to the spot on his lungs as a "mass", rather a "fog" because a fog can be lifted and treated. She also would explain what my husband was going through to me and let me know what kind of support he would need when he gets home. Devota has been our support system, care-giver, and friend for several nights. The kindness, professionalism and genuine concern for her patient exemplifies what a great nurse is and does.
