I work with a nurse who exemplifies the Swedish values and I'm not exaggerating. The thing is, these values are at the marrow of her being. It's who she is. She is passionate about learning and sharing her expertise with others. This is evident in the countless new nurses whom she has precepted, as well as a note of thanks and smile on the faces of nursing school students. She is constantly attending conferences and seminars in her quest to expand her knowledge. Then brings back this knowledge and new skills to put into practice on the unit and share with us all. She leads by example, and she is humble. Never afraid to admit when she is wrong and learn from her mistakes and share her learning story. She commits random acts of kindness because it is who she is. She will bring treats from Starbucks for all the nurses on the unit and thank us for our hard work. She purchases books using her own money to gift to each newborn in our level 2 nursery. And she has each caregiver write in the pages because that's who she is. She is respectful, caring, and compassionate. Every day she goes above and beyond, not only for our patients but her peers as well. Her name is Dewretha Isherwood, and I am honored to call her my mentor, my role model, my friend.
