Diane Bean was my son's nurse on a night that I will never forget or want to relive. We brought our 3 year old son into the ER with a post-operative bleed and in a critical state. Diane was one of the nurses that cared for our son and also us. She was the calm of the storm and never missed a beat. She had just returned to work and was wearing a knitted hat that covered the signs of cancer treatment, she was bright and cheery and she is the reason my son is alive today. We will never be able to repay her for what she did; she will always have a very special place in our hearts. Our family is forever grateful for the care that she provided.

I have known Diane for many years, but have gotten to know her as an RN over the past 4 years when I started my rotations as a student. I had the luck and pleasure of getting to work with and learn from Diane in the ER. She is not only a competent RN but a caring one as well. Her bright and cheery smile always welcomed both me and her patients. Her knowledge was endless and her willingness to help was refreshing. I always felt I could ask her anything or even confess when I had never performed a task before and needed her expertise. She always helped and guided with a smile and never made me feel incompetent or embarrassed. She provided me with confidence and skill that I have used and will continue to use throughout my nursing career. I have often teased her that she was one of the best parts of working nights. I know this is true for all of those who have been blessed to work side by side with her.

A patient was in the ER, with Anaphylactic shock symptoms. Specifically, she was unable to breath. The patient was scared and struggling against the feelings of panic. The staff was working on this patient; putting in IV's, delivering medication and placing an oxygen mask.
Diane came into the room and held the patients hand. Bending down, whispering into the patients ear Diane told the patient to visualize an empty room. She told the patient to put anything she wanted into this room, that it was their own special room. Diane asked if the patient wanted to fill the room with balls, or put a specific type of furniture. Diane kept the patient occupied by walking the patient through decorating the room just the way the patient wanted it. The patient became involved in furnishing the room, and began to relax, started to feel better, and the patients breathing eased. The patient said "Diane means the world to me".
