Knowing that we had Dominique caring for our son really allowed my husband and I to feel certain that he was going to improve every single day.
Our son, P was recently inpatient at CHOP after a Bladder Exstrophy repair surgery where we spent 15 days (split between the NICU and 4East) being cared for by some of the most skilled, compassionate, and hard working nurses, aides, and providers we have ever met. There is one RN in particular that I would be honored to mention who really went above and beyond in making P. (and my husband and I) feel at peace during a time that was very difficult for our family. Dominique cared for P for 5 out of our 9 days on 4 East.
During our time with Dominique, she made us feel as if P was the only patient on the entire unit. She was attentive to our every need, always assured P was comfortable and not in pain, clustered our care to prioritize appropriate rest that was much needed post-operatively, communicated with us frequently to assure we were comfortable with our daily plans and goals, and advocated for P by always reaching out to providers when necessary. Knowing that we had Dominique caring for our son really allowed my husband and I to feel certain that he was going to improve every single day.
As a registered nurse myself, I understand the weight of the DAISY Award and how it is held to a very high standard. In addition to the above qualities and actions that are shared above about Dominique, I would love to share a story about a particular situation where I believe she earned herself a nomination. One morning, we were in the middle of doing P care that included a complete bath, removing him from his SPICA brace, wound and catheter care, and a diaper change when all of a sudden, the nursing student who was assigned to Dominique began to have a medical emergency requiring immediate attention. Without any hesitation, Dominique quickly began caring for two patients instead of one. She began to show leadership qualities by calmly providing instructions and delegating tasks to those who entered the room to assist... all while answering questions and providing emergency assistance to the nursing student. Not even for one moment did Dominque show signs of being overwhelmed or flustered. She also ensured that P was safe and cared for during the event. I am so very grateful that we got to meet Dominique and learn from her all the necessary skills/tasks needed to care for our son post-BE repair.
Without a doubt, I would like to nominate her for a DAISY Award, as I believe there is no one more deserving.
