The ED had an elderly gentleman, very ill, needing to be transferred to St. Louis for further evaluation and treatment. The patient was angry and wanting to leave AMA. Dona talked with the patient. The patient wanted to go outside and call his friend. She overheard his conversation on the phone. Dona discovered the patient was worried about his two Yorkies he had at home and who would care for them if he was away for an extended period of time. Dona sat down with the patient and talked to him about his dogs. She then told the patient she would make sure his dogs were taken care of. She gave him her phone number. She called St. Louis after he was transferred to check on him several times and see how he was doing. She found out he was not doing well. She let the patient know she was going to his home and would get his dogs and take care of them. Dona and her husband are new proud owners of two adorable Yorkie dogs.
