During my orientation on the unit, Donna was my preceptor for three weeks. During those three weeks, I thought she had taught me a lot, but her wisdom, guidance and support continued far after orientation was over. The teamwork exhibited on our unit is second to none, however Donna's dedication to others sets her above the rest. Over this past year, I have witnessed countless instances of her calming even the most irate, confused and aggressive patients. She demonstrates unlimited patience even in the most difficult and trying situations. She will take time to walk with patients, hold their hand, feed them, and sit with them until they are calmed and ready for bed. She will drop what she is doing and offer assistance when she senses another nurse drowning in an assignment. She takes the time to learn new policies and procedures so that patients will be safe under her nursing care. I feel so fortunate to have a trusted resource and mentor like Donna. Though she is loved and appreciated by everyone in the unit, it is important for the organization to recognize and express appreciation for selfless nurses like her. Anyone who knows her would agree.
