Congratulations to the St. Margaret School of Nursing’s first DAISY Faculty Award recipient, Donna Jean Gardner, RN, MSN, CNE. Ms. Gardner was nominated by one of her former students for holding a high standard of professionalism and leadership, qualities that are not exhibited better than anyone than herself. She shows students how to be compassionate, thorough nurses and teaches ways to improve time management and organizational skills. She demonstrates how to treat everyone with respect, from the unpleasant patient, the co-assign who does not understand, to the housekeepers. Ms. Gardner teaches how to be a better team leader and nurse, and encourages those to help wherever possible. The student explained that although there were many days of feeling overwhelmed in nursing school, Ms. Gardner would reassuringly say, “You can do this, just take one step at a time… plan what is most important and most of all show your patients how much you care for them.” The student also described a time when she was so moved with compassion for one of her patients, that she couldn’t help but to tear up. As the student shared her story, Ms. Gardner told her that it was okay to cry and she cried with her. The student expressed that Ms. Gardner is one of the most nurturing and caring nurses she knows, and is by far one of the most respected and held in high-esteem for what she has done for her students. The St. Margaret School of Nursing agrees and proudly honors Ms. Gardner for her dedication to the school, students, and the nursing profession.
