As the family was having this conversation, Dyan was right by their side as they squeezed her hand and leaned on her for support.
At the start of nurses’ week, KP15 CCU received an admission from the ED. This patient was 46 years old and from the UK. It was his first night in NYC with his wife, here to celebrate a milestone birthday and anniversary—a trip that had been carefully planned by the patient for one year.

On the first night in NYC the patient cardiac arrested in his sleep. His wife frantically called the front desk of the hotel, and the patient was admitted to the CICU. His wife was scared and alone, and then she met the nursing team: Dyan Florez Ho on the day shift and Nick Massar on the night shift.

The patient’s wife was scared and alone until her son flew in to be at her side. Dyan and Nick cared for the patient and his family throughout his hospitalization. Explaining step by step what was happening and the milestones we were looking for the patient to achieve. They supported his wife giving the patients wife directions on how to navigate the city and showing her the spectacular views of the skyline from Kimmel to distract her while the patient was undergoing procedures.

Sadly, the patient’s prognosis worsened, and he would not recover.

A family meeting was held to deliver this news to his family. As his wife sat in the conference room hearing news she dreaded to hear, she had her family in the UK on FaceTime and told his children their father would be passing away in NYC. The patient’s wife explained to his children that she wanted to withdraw care and wanted Dyan to be with her husband, followed by Nick that night.

She explained to the family how extraordinary the care was they received and how lucky they were to be in the hands of the nursing care of Dyan and Nick. As the family was having this conversation, Dyan was right by their side as they squeezed her hand and leaned on her for support.

The patient’s wife had such appreciation for the care her husband received. She said throughout the week each night Nick would say to her to tell me what questions or concerns you have, and he would address them.

As the family was going to withdraw care, Dyan knew it was important to make not only the patient comfortable but also his family. The family asked Dyan if she could have the patient wear his football jersey for the Welch football team he coached.

The theme of Nurses’ Week was "Nurses Make a Difference." In the words of Dr. A, "To Dyan and Nick, you make the difference." Before returning to the UK the patient’s family came back to KP15 to thank the staff for all they did and left this note.
