She even sat with me, helped me talk through the feelings I was having, and ultimately gave me the strength and confidence to continue with my day and go on to provide quality care to my patients.
I would like to nominate my fellow nurse and colleague Ellen Kravchenko for the DAISY Award. Last weekend, I had an incredibly difficult shift which affected me emotionally to a great extent. On our unit, we work with a population of patients who are unfortunately, not always the most kind to nurses. Many of these patients are mentally ill and have a number of chronic conditions, including drug/alcohol use. As the primary nurse, we often find ourselves on the receiving end of the patient's frustrations. While I am usually calm and composed at work and able to control my emotions in this stressful environment, this specific day proved to be a real challenge for me emotionally. After reaching out to my co-worker and friend Ellen Kravchenko, I realized that she was the compassionate, kind, and empathetic voice I needed to hear. She encouraged me to step off the unit for a moment to reflect. She even sat with me, helped me talk through the feelings I was having, and ultimately gave me the strength and confidence to continue with my day and go on to provide quality care to my patients. I would like to emphasize that Ellen took time out of her own day when she had a 6-patient assignment (it is a VERY rare occurrence for our floor to go above 5 patients per nurse). Not only is Ellen a wonderful nurse, but she is an exceptional coworker who cares about every individual and has been shown to go out of her way to make patients and colleagues alike feel seen, heard, and appreciated. This story speaks to one of the many reasons why Ellen is deserving of receiving the honor that is the DAISY Award.
