Ellie was a light for our son's NICU journey in a time of darkness. He was diagnosed with HIE at birth and was recovering well but just never began to orally feed well. There were many great nurses who helped provide our son comfort, but Ellie stood out so much. She was also a great comfort to us as parents, knowing how much she cared about our son. On the day he turned one month old, when things were feeling very gloomy, we showed up to his NICU room to find it transformed. Instead of just being a boring, clinical room, it was fitting of celebration. Our first feeling of celebration after a long month. She had hand-made a colorful birthday sign for him, brought in a bouncer, an activity mat, and a light-up aquarium toy that our son *loved*. We have had to get one for home because of how much comfort it gives him. We thanked Ellie profusely for brightening up his room, and she just treated it like no big deal, that he "deserved to have some more comfort in here." I cannot overstate how much her initiative and personal dedication mattered to us. It really felt like a turning point in our son's journey. Whether she wins this award or not, we appreciate her so much. We had many great nurses that we considered nominating for this award, but Ellie really exemplified what The DAISY Award seems to be all about.
