Our 15-year-old daughter was a patient in the neurosurgery unit after having a posterior fossa decompression due to Chiari Malformation. We had been through this surgery 14 years ago with our son, but that didn't make it less scary, and the fear of seeing our daughter in pain and suffering during recovery was alleviated with the support of her nurses at TCH. One nurse, Elyse, stood out the most. She was so genuine and approachable from the moment she introduced herself to us, and we were very happy to see her on the next shift. She was very informative about each detail that was going on in our daughter's recovery. Her attention to detail and compassion at the bedside were extremely evident and critical for us as we were emotional and exhausted. We didn't have to leave the room once to get her to turn off an alarm. Alarm fatigue is real! It's like she was waiting and anticipating when it would go off, and she was there right away. We didn't even have to press the call light. She listened to us and paged the doctor for any concerns or needs we had. It's really hard when you have to track down the nurse to get what you need, and we didn't have to do this at all with Elyse. If she wasn't available immediately, it only seemed like seconds before she was right there. It felt like we were her only patient but I imagine our daughter was probably one of her easiest since she was older and more independent than most of the patients on the unit. She anticipated our daughter's needs and ours as well. Offering us water and informing us of our things in the hospital, also, letting us know when to expect the doctors, and what came next, etc. All of these things helped to make us more comfortable. Overall, our experience at TCH was amazing, and all the nurses were fantastic, but Elyse just stood out above the rest. Thank you to Elyse and everyone for the amazing care and support. We feel so blessed to have had a successful surgery and are overwhelmed by the care provided by Elyse and all of the team. Thank you so much TCH!
