In the ED there was a critically ill nine-month-old child. The parents were Spanish speaking. Emelly came down from ICU to be the translator. She was very thorough and truly helped, not only to obtain answers that the medical staff needed but also to comfort the family who was very concerned.
The next day Emelly told me that when she finished her shift in ICU she then drove to Erlanger to check on the patient and family and offered her translating services. I was very impressed with her compassion at that time. But now, several weeks later she came to me and told me that she has since befriended the family.
She said when she first came to America she could not speak English and remembers how difficult it was and wanted to offer acceptance and support. Emelly in an example of compassion, excellence, and commitment to community care.
