We had a patient who was terminally ill and there was concern that the patient would not make it through the night. My understanding is that the patient was trying to survive long enough to witness a son get married. The actual wedding was scheduled for the following day. When our team realized that the patient would not likely make it through the night, they went to work to set up to have the wedding ceremony performed. The Chaplain came down from Hospice to perform the ceremony. One nurse went and purchased a pretty scarf for the patient to wear and our Charge RN went and bought flowers for the bride. Season's Hospice also sent down their musical therapist (a classical guitarist) to play music. Our physician, who had been caring for the patient stayed late to witness the ceremony as he was also advocating for it. I am told that there was not a dry eye in the entire unit.
