She went out to shadow the nursing staff in Cincinnati, and they saw the compassion and skill that we all see in Emily.
Emily has a gentleness and genuine kindness not often seen in nursing students. Her area of interest is with the pediatric bone marrow transplant population. Over the summer, she participated in an externship at St. Jude's Children's Hospital, where she developed meaningful relationships with patients, families, and her co-workers. She was able to provide care and treatment for the children while educating them and being a support person. She took these experiences back to her classmates, where she shared the unique balance required when working with pediatric cancer patients. Stories of tremendous heroism from the patients touched her heart, and she shared that with others. She is taking that compassion with her to Cincinnati Children's Hospital's BMT unit, as they have offered her a new graduate position with their team. She went out to shadow the nursing staff in Cincinnati, and they saw the compassion and skill that we all see in Emily. The maturity to be skilled in nursing knowledge for this population, to be able to support patients and families, and the knowledge that a little bit of compassion goes a long way is a unique combination of skills. A skill set that Emily Buchtman holds.
